The Sweetest Girl

by Simon

Scritti Politti’s Songs To Remember is one of those albums that I don’t listen to very often but think about a lot.  Green’s amazing lyrics, beautiful vocals and the eccentric, vaguely warped pop music.  Its an album that sits alongside Steve McQueen by Prefab Sprout quite nicely, although at times it would dance alongside Penthouse And Pavement by Heaven 17 without anybody raising an eyebrow.

At its heart is Sweetest Girl, a slow hazy skank, with Robert Wyatt on piano.  Wyatt would appear to be something of an influence, there’s the same askew feel to it.  On the surface its a love song, but something deeper lurks.
