Scott Walker – Such A Small Love

by Simon

It’s funny, sometimes you forget how much you love a song, and then you hear it. For a few years I used to listen to Scott Walker on a daily basis, and then since then only occasionally. Felt a little like I’d grown out of him. Well, I can tell you, I’m going to be listening on a regular basis again!

This is from the 1st ‘Scott’ album, and is a lovely ballad, starting off with a weirdly ambient churchy verse breaking into one of those big soaring choruses that Scott did so well, with a lovely arrangement providing the perfect platform for that voice. There are very few perfect pairings of music and voice; Otis or Marvin at their best, Sinatra, perhaps even Mick over Keef’s riffs; but for me it’s Scott everytime.
