The charts in the 80s weren’t any more varied than any other time when you actually look back at them. There are plenty of middle of the road hits, American rockers, disco poppers. There were bands like the Human League and ABC, Blancmange, Depeche Mode and Adam & The Ants too though, and most of them were good for a couple of singles and an album. At the time it seemed like they were what the charts were all about, but go back and check out some top 40s from those days.

Soft Cell are one of my absolute favourites, brilliant songs, fantastic lyrics and that heightened sense of drama and emotion. One of my favourite singers from the time too, despite being slightly off the whole time; that very human element makes the synths less cold, more real and gritty.
