Grace Potter & The Nocturnals

My house is a little obsessed with Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, an American band whose latest album is a slick and shiny mix of Fleetwood Mac, The Faces and country rock given a nice thump by Dr Dre associate Mark Batson.

There’s a line running through my collection that I can probably trace back to my mum listening to country when I was a kid, takes in Rumours era Fleetwood Mac, early Pretenders and Go-Gos and picks up Lone Justice in the mid 80s and swerves by the Cowboy Junkies later on. Grace Potter & The Nocturnals might not seem like the sort of thing I normally like, but it’s more that they’re not the sort of thing I normally write about. Attractive American (and Canadian)girls singing country flavoured rock is probably my equivalent to some people’s Indie girls called Harriet.

Their latest album came out last year, but only reached my ears this last month. It’s the band’s 4th album and it’s a lot more focused and pop than previous ones. Tight as too, not surprising for a band that gigs at least 200 times a year! It’s full of Fleetwood-esque mid tempo dreamy rockers like the song above, Tiny Lights and big stompers like the number below, Paris. Paris manages to evoke Suzi Quatro jamming with Prince, which right now is something I approve of!

The album has been on rotation on the Pod, and when I come home it was playing as I walked through the door. Paris also had the little boy singing along today with the ‘ooh la la’s, which is currently the cutest thing ever.

Holiday

I’m off on a short holiday this week, heading off to Italy for a wedding. I’m hoping for a relaxing time, I’m in serious need of a recharge.

Meanwhile I’ve been listening to Grace Potter & The Nocturnals lately, who sit somewhere to the side of Fleetwood Mac, have some cracking tunes and are great live. Not my usual cup of tea, but it’s a lot of fun, which is quite the tonic right now.

(Plus anybody that can handle an organ is alright by me…)
