Cath – The Bluebells
by Simon
There are songs that you forget about and then they come on and they whisk you back in time. Cath by The Bluebells was almost a hit in 1983 – number 62 apparently – and then just edged into the Top 40 in 1984 after their success with Young At Heart. Cath was always their best song in my opinion, much better than YAH. It’s got that 60s jangle going on, very Beatles For Sale, plus a big football chant chorus, which reminds me a lot of The Alarm, who were just becoming big at the time. Then there’s the final section of the song, where it goes all Maggie Mae for a bit and some great lead vocals. And the classic line “You spoil my day for the rest of the night”…
Agreed – this was their best song
Disagree, I’m Falling is the best thing the Bluebells recorded.
I only recently picked up the Bluebells greatest hits collection and amazingly heard this for the first time. Lovely stuff.
I’m Falling….I hated that song, I was ill for about a month in 1984 when that track was out and it takes me back to being at home away from my mates feeling rough as hell. Nah, not good…
Lovely record, though I did think the “Cath/Laff” rhyme was a bit, well, naff.
Hi there Simon,
Quite some time ago (Dec 2009) you posted a link to a Style Council cover of “Times are tight” by Jimmy Young.
I’ve long since lost my tape recording of the original set (from radio 1) and (curses) it appears that media fire have deleted the one you had linked to.
You wouldn’t happen to know the whereabouts of another copy at all?
Long shot I know, but here’s hoping.
All the very best.
